Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Zach I just watched a 15 minute video of the Millennial Farmer (you) and your operation and all about the money you can make off sponsors the way I look at that is that is no body's business but your own I'm sure there are a lot of viewers that would like to know that kind of info. well I am not one of them what and how you earn a living to provide for your family is between you and your family and that's it I'll bet there was not a long line of people standing around waiting to help you out kinda like the "little red hen, no one wanted to help her til it came time to eat the bread" I hope I did not over step my boundary here for one and I don't have many good points about me is I am not nosey your business is yours and mine is mine, I have only been watching about four or five months now I have subscribed and I try to remember to like the videos as long as the Lord will allow me to watch I will, stay safe and take care...

Other people would say "Why bother fixing it, or why bother staying on a tractor doing something that won't work", but a farmer... Oohohoho. He would see that problem and say "Bring it, b!#%&". That's his mentality, he's always testing everything and taking risks more than anybody else in order for his crops to grow and make a living for himself

Since it is a used machine, were there are new rear colters on it? They look like they’re backwards. Nuts should face the fertilizer tubes. It makes them harder to install (need to use a manual wrench instead of a power tool).

Zach, This may have been answered or explained much earlier by someone smarter than me but: Why do you always till, plow, plant, harvest and maintain a field (or plot in a field) in only one direction? North/South or East/West? It would seem you could get better dispersal of the remaining stobs, and better destruction of mud balls, etc. if you varied the directions of your field work ? Would that not also change drainage patterns and help prevent top soil (and fertilizer) runoff/loss. Obviously, if you have a field that has a severe slope you must work it to horizontally (to hold mosture and prevent runoff) ... but for a relatively flat field why not treat it like a multi-dimensional chess, rather than checkerboard ?

If you were to open up the soil so it can dry out on that hill that is so sticky. Or cross till the field before you make it into rows to seed. It seams that you do the same direction with all the your tillage. I was planting Chowder Pea's and we cross till our fields before we planted as we also had some soggy soil, and also much sandy soil in places. Just suggestion.

Somebody should tell this guy... way to complex piece of equipment with way too many moving parts trying to be way too cute... His soil is way too wet to be strip tilling... What are you doing??? Destroying that field!!! You should hook up to a grain drill and plant some overwintering legumes and cool season grasses for cover crops. BTW a mandako turbo till is not a cover crop "planter" Lol. Park the mile long train, save the time and spread your fertilizer and actually use a drill to plant your cover crop! Probably is pretty frustrating to do things backwards... look at some regenerative cover crop farming practices It will make your operation 100 times more time efficient and manageable! And is way better for building soil health than anything I saw in this video. Farming's never easy especially when making it harder then it has to be man! Feel for you, Simplify and regenerate. There's a much better way

Sorry you had such a hard day.. thing do wear out.. I would be pissed off if the gears to that handle you were cranking on.. were made of nylon or even just one of them.. especially if it has stripped out the teeth.. I remember in old days.. that square pipe on a case planter or cultivator was turned up 90 degrees, maybe 45, anyway the corners were turn-up to 0 degrees & pointing at the sky.. the age of the case equipment was about 40 years old & there was not a bit of wear on these bars.. I know because I turned a 3 point cultivator into a two row planter.. & things that old just don't go that long without showing any wear.. SO MUCH FOR MODERN EQUIPMENT BUILT IN EXPENSES FOR THE FARMER.. THE DIGITAL AGE SUCKS... YOU DIDN'T NEED ANYONE BEFORE? MEET YOU NEW BEST FRIEND.. THE ELECTRONICS ENGINEER.

Moisture and bridging of the fertilizer in the tube entry/ Venturi is a common issue and if the fertilizer has high ratio of fines it is worse. One year the fertilizer plant had issues with the prilling process machinery but sent out fertilizer anyway, the headaches and trouble that caused was enormous and the application of product was erratic, even when we switched to spinner applications the streaking was ridiculous as the fines would not carry far enough to cover the width of the normal.

I literally had a mud puddle in the yard that I watched for years, if there was standing water in it, it was too wet to farm. As soon as the water disappeared we could farm without issue. Also had a portable scale that could calculate lbs of materials per cubic foot as well as small tube that went on the seed hose where you drove so many feet and collected material and it gave you a rate per acre. Simple tools that computers can’t argue with or give error. As I see farming now, the computer is a curse and a boon to farming, if you rely too heavily on them it can severely skew your common sense and you definitely need to validate and verify results as well as listen to the old boys that learned lessons. Not saying you shouldn’t try new and innovative ways. I was instrumental in numerous design and testing of machinery and techniques that are currently the standard of farming now. There were often total wrecks and trusting your gut should not be ignored. Good luck and you are doing a great job showing the trials of farming that are encountered each day. Hang in there.

Them air carts can get frustrating! Have had same problems as u were having. Humidity especially with potash gums the meter an where it drops from meter to air system plugs when wet/humid. Putting a hydraulic oil cooler where fan sucks air in helps warm an dry the air in the fall but don't cure it. Food for thought if continue to do fertilizer in fall. Like watching ur videos! From western sd/nd border an u are doing alot advocating for us farmers. Really appreciate it!

If I've learned anything from your videos, it's that I'll stick to my method of farming. Older machines, less tech, no debt, less pressure. It's cool to see all the newest machinery, but as soon as something quits or throws a code and you have to call the dealer to hook up a laptop, that's where I'm out. Sometimes all the newest most efficient machines don't seem to pay for themselves and what little they gain in efficiency they kill you somewhere else.

I have a great plaines seven and a half inch grain drill that runs on ground driven chain sprockets My brother wanted to put a hydraulic drive on it I just laughed and said no way!!! I can relate because I tried to get too cute with my corn planter a few years ago and was nothing but headaches until I literally got rid of it and went back to a simpler version. All of that new fancy stuff looks pretty good in January and February when the salesman is giving you the pitch but when it's go time you need manageable functional equipment that you can get in and just go! Time is money I found with the variable rate technology guys have equipment big enough to do a whole field in 5 hours, But around my area I see most of them sitting on the end for 45 minutes to an hour just setting up all of the prescription stuff! Lol. Drill some cover crops that will help even out your soil and if you really want to do some prescription variable rate which we do I use a nice Salford single container Salford spreader for dry fert. Never been a fan of strip till it seems like only every 3 years the soil is dry enough to do it right and the machines often have so many moving parts... If it moves it breaks
